Deforestation linked to agriculture is most severe in regions with economic and social disparities. Many areas losing forest cover are in lower-income countries producing commodities for global markets, while the environmental costs are disproportionately felt by local and Indigenous communities. These landscapes are sacrificed to feed and fuel distant economies, while the local populations face the lasting consequences: degraded ecosystems, lost livelihoods, and increased vulnerability to climate change. Meanwhile, countries that consume the most of these goods often maintain their own forests - pay attention to not only the regions impacted by deforestation, but the regions that are not.
